The month of Valentine's Day. As soon as the Christmas decorations come down, the retailers gear up for 'love month'. I appreciate the sentiment, if not the commercialism, as much as anyone. Maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age... I am approaching my mid-thirties, after all... but my husband and I have long ago abandoned the traditional card and gift exchange. We appreciate each other - and tell each other every day - so we don't need a special day to do so.
The romantic in me loves Valentine's Day though! There's a magic in the air, an electric current of hope + fear. Society puts so much emphasis on being a part of a couple and if you're not a 'second half', it becomes very obvious on February 14th. But the love celebrated in February doesn't have to be limited to romantic love. Love makes the world a better place. So this month, celebrate your friends and family - and even yourself!
