And now a two week long “weekend” looms before us. I am looking forward to spending lots of time with my boys. With the homemade pizza in the oven for another 30 minutes, the boys got restless and my youngest asked to watch TV.
No, I decided, I would read to them. I pulled out a stack of Robert Munsch books and starting reading. I had one kid hanging off my back (more comfortable than it sounds) and the other by my side, reading the words along with me. And I don’t just read. I whisper. I yell. I make sound effects. I’m noisy. And it was the best 30 minutes with my kids. Me reading, them listening. Just the thing to kick off Christmas vacation.
My writing is truly a glimpse into the crux of who I am. When I was little, my mom made this Jell-O cake where she would poke holes in a white cake and pour liquid Jell-O over the whole cake. If my book is the cake, then I am the Jello-O.
To continue with the analogy… I just baked another cake, er, the cake comes out of the oven in February. If you think I’m completely off my rocker now… I signed a book contract this year and the release date is scheduled for February 2017! Exciting times! Again, I feel like my dreams are coming true. Another book. Stay tuned for the happy event – don’t worry you won’t miss it!
Dream Hunter celebrates its book birthday this month. I love my characters, Cynthia and Gabe. This year I’ve promoted DH with Book Hearts, The Masquerade Crew, Genre Pulse, My Book Place, and Fire and Ice Book Promos. If you haven’t read it, now’s the time…
Up and coming events for Maya? Look out for a flurry of promotional activity in February-ish when my new book hits the web… A DH prequel is still on my radar. A sequel to my soon-to-be latest book is also in the works. Plus life and all that entails… Stay tuned… for a merry holiday season and more musings from Maya in 2017!
Another year has flown by! Last year I published my first book, Dream Hunter. During 2015, I finished writing two more books (yet to be published).
Speaking of Dream Hunter... Today happens to be its book birthday! Exactly one year ago today, Dream Hunter was published by Just Ink Press. Keep watching this site as well as Twitter and Facebook for some exciting birthday-related events...
In November-December, Dream Hunter participated in Cover Wars. No results yet... Thanks for all the votes!
After two whirlwind months of posting my own story samples (October) and hosting guests (November), Maya's Musings was quiet in December. On Christmas Day I posted a short story called Christmas Dreams. Did you read it?
The Nuthouse Scribblers
Earlier this month, I wrote a guest post on The Nuthouse Scribblers called The Business of Writing about how I've worked to promote Dream Hunter. My article had over 1300 hits and received some helpful comments about book promotion.
What's next for Maya Tyler in 2016? More writing, of course. Stay tuned for more from Maya!
Happy American Thanksgiving! We enjoyed our turkey yesterday and now it's time to buy Christmas presents!
Fall is certainly a busy time... Here's what I've been up to lately...
In October, I featured my own writing samples...
It's About The Journey
In November, I featured five talented authors in my Guest Takeover series...
Up and Coming
Dream Hunter will turn one on December 30th. Stay tuned for some exciting birthday events!
I just finished the first draft of The Guardians, my prequel to Dream Hunter...
School is well under way, Canadian Thanksgiving is behind us, and Halloween is on the horizon. The boys are dressing up like ninja warriors. They're excited about it so we're excited too.
Fall can be a somewhat depressing season. It's the prelude to winter, after all. The darkness, the rain, the falling leaves, the intense, crisp air... But I see it as a transitional season, a season for change. The boys were not the only ones starting school this September. I decided to take a creative writing course as part of my self-care plan. It's like the ultimate 'writer's block' busting tool! I'm really enjoying it and I'm honing my critique skills at the same time.
This month I am featuring my own writing. I realized, as a relatively new and unknown author, I should post more of my own writing. If potential readers liked my writing samples, then perhaps they would buy my book. It seemed like a more attractive alternative to constantly screaming on social media, "Buy my book!" In all seriousness, if you like paranormal romance, you should read Dream Hunter. :)
Cynthia’s dreams are so real, they are actually coming true – complete with the prerequisite dream guy. But things are not as they seem. Who said dreams are sweet?
Every Friday in October, I will post a new, original writing sample. Here's what I've posted so far.
I love hosting guests on my blog so, in November, I will have some special visitors! Stay tuned for Natasha Blackthorne, Cherie Nicholls, Devika Fernando, Robin Badillo, and Kiru Taye.
Who knows what the future holds? I am always looking to the future, having fun making plans. In addition to the next two months of scheduled blogs, I'm working on a prequel to Dream Hunter, a short story, and I possibly have a non-fiction piece in the works.
As always, happy reading and happy writing! And don't forget to take care of yourself during this season of change.
It's been a busy summer and now, that the kids are back in school, it's time to recap and forecast the happenings...
If you're an avid reader, like me, then you love to read about author celebrities. In August I ran the '10 Things About Me' series which featured 7 fabulously talented authors - Karen Rose Smith; Madison Sevier; Karin Baine;Jinxie G; Summerita Rhayne; Rachel Thompson; and Tara Taylor Quinn. I had the great fortune to host these fascinating authors. On my blog, they revealed 10 interesting facts about themselves, including pictures and their latest book covers.
What's next for Maya's Musings? I just featured a book spotlight with Doris O'Connor's Claimed By Her Bears... Click here to check it out.
This month I am participating in The Masquerade Crew's Cover Wars! So vote for Dream Hunter today and every day until the winner is announced! Please and thank you! I even wrote a blog post on why you should vote for my book cover. Click here to check it out.
I've also hired The Masquerade Crew for some book promo. Stay tuned for an author interview...

Writing is an outlet for me. With all the stress in this world, I think everyone needs an outlet or a hobby.
So read, write, ride a bike, sew, box, fish, walk, golf, play a board game, solve a puzzle, sing some karaoke, or get some retail therapy... No matter what you do, take care of yourself!
Until next time, happy reading and happy writing... or biking, sewing, boxing, fishing, golfing, gaming, puzzling, singing, shopping... :)
I think the key to happiness is being happy with what you have.
For the most part, no matter what curveballs life throws me, I am content. I have goals, but I don't feel like I need to keep up with the Jones'. That being said, since the start of summer, I felt like I was torn between the ability to simply enjoy my time and waiting anxiously for August to arrive... I try not to wish my time away, but I was so excited for the '10 Things About Me' series, which started August 1, to begin.
I love reading and writing - besides my family - these are my greatest passions. Due to my current health situation, I have been writing less and concentrating more on connecting with other readers and authors. I thought up this new series at the end of June and I invited some of my favorite authors - those I have been reading for years and those I have recently met - to participate. I am delighted, and a little overwhelmed, at the interest and enthusiasm shown for this project... So far my blog has featured Karen Rose Smith, Madison Sevier, Karin Baine, and Jinxie G. Stay tuned for Summerita Rhayne, Rachel Thompson, and Tara Taylor Quinn featured later this month.
I love having guests on my blog. I greatly respect the hard work and dedication of authors. Writing a book is not an easy feat. Being an author is not a career choice for the weak-hearted. So I try to promote the work of other authors as often as I can. Alannah Harte recently visited my blog to talk about her latest release The Real Deal.
I try to visit other blogs and websites as well. On a monthly basis, I write a guest post for The Nuthouse Scribblers. My next piece will be posted this Monday - August 17.
Happiness is all about balance. Work and then play. Doing what you can for others. Doing the activities you love. I hope you are having an awesome summer and that you have unlocked the key to your happiness!
Things don't always go to plan. That's life. It's not always fair, but it certainly keeps things interesting. With my kids home for the summer, life just got a little busier... meaning plans are non-existent and survival each day is the goal. It's not that bad... Really? Maybe?
I celebrated Dream Hunter's 6 month book birthday on June 30th. As part of my celebration I interviewed my book's cover artist Lori Lasswell, posted Dream Hunter 'Did You Know' Facts on my blog, and guest blogged on Just Paranormal Romance. I also recently guest blogged on The Nuthouse Scribblers talking about my new writing spot.
Looking to the future, I'm interviewing Raven McAllan on July 17 and interviewing with The Reading Head on July 31.
Plus I am coordinating an exciting August series on my blog Maya's Musings featuring Karen Rose Smith, Madison Sevier, Karin Baine, Jinxie Gervasio, Summerita Rhayne, Rachel Thompson, and Tara Taylor Quinn. Stay tuned for more...
I have been working hard to promote my blog Maya's Musings... My blog features a variety of different posts... my thoughts, my original stories, book spotlights and giveaways, and interviews. This month I proudly unveiled the site's new button designed by das studio.
Later this month, I will interview Sallyann Phillips, the author of the Angel's Blood series, and Lori Lasswell, the designer of Dream Hunter's book cover. Stay tuned for these great interviews!
It's been another exciting month filled with book and writing-related activities. Honestly, there is so much more to being an author than I had initially realized. It's intriguing - thinking of interesting articles, blog posts, and stories to write as well as new ways to promote said work - and pushes me creatively.
But the more I learn, I more I realize I don't know. So, I'll continue to read articles about writing, write as much as I can, and continue to implement new ways to promote myself and my work.
Speaking of promoting... in the last month, I created a new Facebook author page https://www.facebook.com/MayaTylerAuthor. I also created a new meme for my book Dream Hunter.
I've found exposure on multiple sites is a great way to get your name out there. I recently interviewed with The Drunken Druid for The Thursday Interview and Book Reader Magazine for their Featured Author segment. Books Go Social continued to promote Dream Hunter by tweeting my blog post What's in a Name? (viewed over 2100 times) and advertising Dream Hunter in their monthly email. Readers Gazette is also promoting Dream Hunter on Twitter with lovely 'Have you read this book yet?' posters. And, just last week, Book Excursions Book Reviews showcased Dream Hunter on Facebook in their weekly competition.
On my plate right now...
Writing... working on an article, 2 blog posts, and 3 short stories, and editing a full-length novel...
Promotion... working on building a larger following for my blog Maya's Musings... Just commissioned a new button for my site...
Thanks for keeping in touch! Have a great day! :)
Where have I been? Where am I going?
It's been an exciting month for me and I'll sum up some of the highlights. My most popular blog posts were my #SexySnippets, featuring seven sentence excerpts from Just for Tonight and Carrie's Bliss. I also wrote a character article for Wise Words - Book Blogger and guest blogged at The Nuthouse Scribblers. At the beginning of April, I hired the exciting team at Books Go Social to promote my book Dream Hunter for a year. I re-organized my blog Maya's Musings and started #TheTuesdayPoll on my website. Plus I added a Facebook page for Dream Hunter.
Best new writing tools... include bitly and Hootsuite... and I continue to search and research ways of extending my reach into Social Media and increasing my engagment...
What does the future look like for me? I'm turning my focus onto my weekly blog posts. I plan to increase the number of guest features and continue to look for new and original topics. I'm also keen to complete one of the many WIPs I have been working on. The reason I started writing in the first place was to write. I need to concentrate on one story at a time and keep to a more consistent writing schedule.
What have you been up to? What does your future look like?
Maya Tyler has been writing romance novels since 2010. She loves music, movies, live theater and reading.
